This wasn’t your average adventure. On our recent trip to Maui, we traded hiking boots for camo and joined local hunters for an unforgettable experience that blended tradition, conservation, and community.

Axis deer were introduced to the islands in the 1800s—and without natural predators, their population has exploded, threatening native ecosystems and crops. What we thought would be a rugged hunting trip quickly turned into a powerful lesson in balance.

Led by a group of local hunters, we hiked through rolling pastures and thick forests, learning to track with patience and respect. Every step came with a story—of ancestry, stewardship, and the kuleana (responsibility) to protect the land. These weren’t just hunters; they were caretakers of the island.

We harvested with intention, nothing wasted. After the hunt, we shared a meal with our hosts—venison cooked over an open flame, fresh and simple. The conversation flowed easily, filled with laughter, reflections, and an unshakable connection to the land.

This trip reminded us that adventure isn’t just about adrenaline. It’s about understanding. About listening. And about walking away with more than just memories—walking away with meaning.
